2024’s colour shades of summer revealed

Colour can have an amazing impact on a home but when it comes to selling a property, there is a set of tried and tested advice to follow.  

We’re advocates of a neutral backdrop and you can’t go wrong with a fresh lick of paint – white, cream or another light colour – on walls, ceilings and woodwork. That said, your home doesn’t have to be a blank, sterile environment.  

There are several ways to add colour to every room and the good news? Almost all of them are temporary so you can pack them up and take them to a new property. Choose from vases, cushions and rugs in the living room; crockery, placemats and storage canisters in the kitchen, towels, candles and bath mats in the bathroom, and bedlinen, lampshades and throws in bedrooms.  

Here are our favourite colour themes for late spring and summer.  

Muted greens

The spectrum of green colours ranges from the coolest mint to the darkest emerald but currently on-trend are gentle greens that work well when used alone or layered together. If you’re struggling to identify the right shades, look for products with nature-inspired names, such as forest, fern, moss, sage, pistachio and olive.  

Works well with: gold accessories, taupe, shell pink and burnt copper.  

Ocean blues

Blue is one of the most popular colours used when decorating as it’s said to induce feelings of calmness, serenity, peace and order. This year, interior designers are drawing inspiration from the colours of the ocean. A combination of teal, aquamarine, azure, cerulean, turquoise and navy will transport you to an exotic coastline.  

Works well with: silver accessories, jade green, tangerine orange and crisp white  

Gold

The shimmering qualities of gold add lustre and luxury without effort. There are a number of finishes you can choose from: polished, mat, hammered, satin, brushed, etched and engraved, with different undertones too. Rose gold has pink undertones, old/antique gold has warmer, deeper undertones, while yellow gold has richly golden undertones.  

Works well with: forest green, midnight blue, black and turquoise  

Earthy reds

Most reds would be off limits when undertaking an interior design project but chalky, matt shades are surprisingly versatile. Gaining in popularity are vases and vessels made from terracotta and red clay, with their raw texture providing an almost tribal feel. Look for product colours that are described as Tuscan, earthy, terre, Etruscan or Pompeiian.  

Works well with: light and mid grey, petrol blue, taupe and olive green  

Pastels

If you are looking for an alternative to white or cream as your all-over wall colour, there are a number of ultra-light pastels that could be used. Dulux has a fabulous selection, including Moon Shimmer, New Meringue and Rock Salt. Pastels with more pigment, such as candy floss pink, mint green, sea breeze and eau de nil, can be styled to look fresh and crisp, especially when used in small doses.  

Works well with: copper accessories, soft cream, blush pink and sage green
